What is Transoral Laser Microsurgery and How Can it Be Used to Treat Head & Neck Cancers?
Transoral laser microsurgery and robotic surgery are the two minimally invasive surgical techniques currently in use to remove cancers through the mouth.
Transoral laser microsurgery involves using a carbon dioxide laser as the cutting tool to remove tumors. As the name implies, the surgery is performed through the mouth with specialized endoscopic instruments. A surgical microscope is used to provide visualization during the procedure.
How is Transoral Laser
Microsurgery Performed?
During the procedure, an endoscope is positioned in the oral cavity for exposure of the operative field. The laser is used to remove the tumor from surrounding tissue. A micromanipulator attached to the microscope, or an hand held instrument, directs the laser energy to the tissue, under microscopic vision. Decades of experience using this technique has resulted in safety protocols that have stood the test of time.
Lasers differ by wave length of light emitted, each with their own effects on tissue. The carbon dioxide laser is the most frequently used in head and neck tumor removal.
Transoral Laser Microsurgery
Advantage
Minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as transoral laser microsurgery or robotic surgery for head and neck cancer excision, allow tumor removal through the mouth, thus avoiding an open technique that is associated with longer hospitalization and recovery time.
What is Transoral Laser Microsurgery Used to Treat?
Transoral laser microsurgery is used to treat a variety of issues. Some of the most common include:
Oral Cavity Cancers
Laryngeal Cancers
Pharyngeal Cancers
Benefits of
Transoral Laser Microsurgery
There are multiple benefits for patients undergoing transoral laser microsurgery compared to open techniques. Some of these benefits include:
- Limited damage to nerves, blood vessels and muscles of the mouth and throat
- No external visible scarring
- Reduced hospital stay and healing time
- Reduced blood loss during surgery
- Increased surgical visualization and precision.
